Mary Keller Obituary

Mary Lu Keller, 98, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, June 28, 2022. The family will have a private burial service.

Mary Lu was born on January 29, 1924, to Charles Culberson, a county agent, and Madge Jett Jobson, a housewife, in Beeville, Texas. While growing up, her family lived in Beeville, Anson and Lubbock. After graduation from Lubbock High School, she attended the fall 1941 semester at the Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. When the United States entered World War II, at her father’s request she came home and transferred to Texas Technological College in Lubbock, where she graduated with a degree in Nutrition.

After college, she worked as a dietician in Lubbock, then Georgetown and Houston. It was in Houston that she met Hubert “Bones” Keller when both sang in the choir at St. Paul’s Methodist Church. They married in 1953 and lived in Houston, Lubbock, Amarillo, Dallas, Chicago, and then moved to Bedford in 1965. They had three boys, David, Robert, and Charles, and a daughter, Virginia Sue, who died shortly after birth.

Mary Lu had a strong faith in God and was active in her church wherever she lived. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hurst for 57 years. She and Bones delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, and she supported numerous charities throughout her life. She cared for Bones at home until shortly before he passed away in 2012. She was blessed with good health and, to the end, a sharp mind and an inquisitive nature about all things. In addition to visiting with her many friends and relatives, and keeping up with the news of the day, she especially enjoyed watching the seasons from her window at home.

She is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Virginia Sue, and her husband Hubert. Survivors include sons David, Robert and wife, Kelly, and Charles; grandchildren, Brooks and Sarah; and nephews with their families.

The family is grateful to her caregivers and hospice team, who faithfully attended to her with love and affection.
