Obituary

Ruth Lois Rice Telschow, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on April 17, 2023, after an extended illness over the last several years. Ruth was born in The Bronx, NY on October 16, 1940, to Henry and Betty Rice. Moving and growing up in Massachusetts, she went on to Keystone College (PA) where she would graduate with an associate degree in 1960. Moving back to NYC, she was set up on a blind date with Robert Telschow that went so well, they would be married 5 months later on May 20, 1961. Ruth and Robert moved to Long Island, NY where they started a family and had three children. Six months after their youngest was born, they were transferred to Houston, TX where they settled in NW Houston (Cypress). As a community volunteer, she was the founding editor of the Norchester News and acted as a coach of several softball and basketball teams (for girls and boys) for the Cy-Fair Sports Association in the 1970s and early-80's. She even coached a few football games when needed. She was known for her competitive teams and her competitive spirit. Earning a bachelor's and master's degree in Sociology along with a teaching certificate from the University of Houston, Ruth became a researcher in the Department of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. She would then transition into education as a Professor of Sociology at North Harris County Community College (later renamed Lone Star College - Tomball) where she was loved by her students. She taught there for almost 15 years until her retirement in 2006. After her husband retired in 2016, they moved to Fort Worth, TX where she would spend her remaining years. She enjoyed traveling, creating art using mixed media, and spending time with her husband of 61 years. She is survived by her loving husband (Robert), her sister and brother-in-law (Sheila and Doug Morrow), her adult children (Ken Telschow and his wife, Laura; Karen Telschow Johnson; and Chris Telschow and his wife, Vickie), her nieces (Tracy and Robyn Morrow), her grandchildren (Morgan Johnson, Madison Telschow, Maddox Telschow, and Ethan Johnson), her lifetime best friend (Marilyn Druker Wanderer), and other extended family.

In remembrance of Ruth's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to Community Healthcare of Texas Hospice House at Huguley (www.chot.org).
