Richard Vernon McGill Obituary
Lt. Colonel Richard “Dick” McGill passed away on February 8, 2024, at the age of 89 at his home in North Richland Hills, Texas. His battle with serious heart issues and strokes in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with his wit and smiles. As in life, Dick was a hero and stayed strong until the end, always putting others and his family first.
As a child, Dick loved sports, excelled at school, and proclaimed his goal to become a “pilot” when he grew up. His dream was fulfilled when he graduated high school early and went on to college to get the two-year requirement to enter into the Air Force Cadet Flight Training. Achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel and a stellar 22 years of service, Dick retired from the Air Force to go on to a successful career as a private commercial pilot. After he was awarded numerous medals, mostly from 3 tours in Vietnam, he was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism during battle. After Vietnam, he went on to finish his distinguished career at Carswell Air Force Base, bringing him to Fort Worth, Texas.
Dick met the love of his life while picking up his mail, a beautiful young postal worker named Rose who he was immediately smitten with. That is when their 42 years together started, of which 32 years of marriage and family began. As a blended family, between Dick and Rose, they had 5 children, 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He also was blessed with 2 loving sisters, Jan and Sharon.
Dick McGill: pilot, veteran, war hero, athlete, world traveler, golfer, family man, and avid competitive bridge player loved his family, always thinking of them first. Dick had a wonderful sense of humor and loved ribbing everyone and could also laugh at himself. His dedication to his family and country will be missed by all. As always, he will be looking down from Heaven watching over us.
