Bonnie Schroeder Weikel Obituary

Mother, wife, sister, cousin, aunt, colleague, friend—Bonnie Schroeder Weikel was many things to many people and loved by all who knew her. A native Texan and true extrovert, she had a unique talent for connecting with strangers, often through her beloved hometown of Brownwood, Texas. Her family affectionately called it “Six Degrees of Brownwood.”

Bonnie spent her formative years in Brownwood with her parents, William G. Schroeder and Dorothy Jean Schroeder, her older brother Billy, her older sister Jan, and her cousin Patsy who lived with them for several years.  After high school, she enrolled as one of the first female students at Texas A&M. With her first husband, Charlie, she welcomed their son, Charles Michael Burris. After returning to Brownwood, Bonnie earned her bachelor's degree from Howard Payne University and began working at the local hospital. Her passion for healthcare led her to enroll in the Masters of Health Care Administration program at Trinity University in San Antonio, where she met her husband of 46 years, Allen Faris Weikel.

Following a brief stint in Houston, Bonnie, Allen, and Mike settled in El Paso, Texas. Bonnie thrived as a Hospital Administrator at Providence Memorial Hospital. During her tenure at Providence, she and Allen expanded their family with the birth of their daughters, Kristina Ann and Stephanie Marie. Bonnie cherished her 17 years in El Paso, often reminiscing about the mountains and the sense of home the city provided.

In Dallas, Bonnie served as vice president of the Dallas County Medical Society until her retirement in 2009. She was a dedicated sustainer in the Junior League of Dallas and played a key role in hosting the Linz Award luncheon for many years. Bonnie's adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively with family and friends, with a special fondness for her annual trips to the Indian Market in Santa Fe.

In 2021, Bonnie joyfully embraced her role as a grandmother, affectionately known as Bon Bon, to Logan Allen, son of Kristi and Billy McGee. In 2022, Bonnie and Allen found a welcoming church family at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Hurst, Texas, where Bonnie dedicated herself to the altar guild. The following year, their daughter Stephanie and her husband, Andrew Gaska, brought another bundle of joy into the family with the birth of Isla Grace.

After a prolonged battle with lung disease, Bonnie (72) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on July 14, 2024. Her legacy of love, kindness, and service has left an indelible mark on many lives, and she will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bonnie’s honor can be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Hurst, Texas or the American Lung Association.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 10:00AM at Forest Ridge Funeral Home and Chapel, located at 8525 Mid Cities Boulevard, North Richland Hills, Texas. Light refreshments will be served immediately after services conclude.
